Deangelo Lee Evansโ€”known to many as โ€œMuscleโ€ and to family as โ€œLoloโ€โ€”is more than an undefeated professional boxer. He is a living example of resilience, determination, and the power of refusing to give up on yourself, no matter where you start in life.   Growing up, Evans had a natural love for athletics. He competed in football, track and field, and wrestling, sports that helped channel his energy and gave him structure during turbulent years. Wrestling, in particular, taught him discipline and toughnessโ€”qualities that would later define his boxing career. However, it wasnโ€™t until he was 19 years old, while in college, that Evans first stepped into a boxing gym. Looking for another way to stay active outside of wrestling, he was introduced to the sport that would ultimately transform his life.

When Evans first walked into the gym, his coach immediately noticed himโ€”literally. One day during training, Evans took his shirt off because the gym was unbearably hot. His coach, who admittedly struggled with remembering peopleโ€™s names, looked at him and jokingly called him โ€œMuscle.โ€ The nickname stuck instantly. From that moment forward, the young fighter became known as Deangelo โ€œMuscleโ€ Evansโ€”a walking muscle, both physically and mentally.

Evans began his boxing journey under the guidance of coach Marcus Luck, who remains his trainer today at Luckโ€™s Boxing Gym in Danville, Virginia. Another key influence in his development has been fellow fighter and mentor Drew Correll, who helped guide Evans through the early stages of his career. Their mentorship provided something Evans had rarely experienced beforeโ€”consistent guidance, structure, and belief.

Unlike many fighters, Evans did not follow the traditional amateur boxing path. Instead of compiling a long amateur record, he built his experience the old-school wayโ€”sparring professional fighters and competing in smokers. Those experiences hardened him quickly and taught him the importance of having the right team around you. For Evans, boxing was never just about throwing punches. It was about learning, trusting his coaches, and understanding the long game.

In 2021, Evans officially turned professional, and his rise has been nothing short of impressive. Fighting primarily in the 140-147 pound weight classes and standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, Evans has developed a reputation for explosive power and smart shot selection. His professional record stands at an extraordinary 14 wins, 0 losses, with 13 knockoutsโ€”a testament to both his strength and his calculated fighting approach.

While many fighters define themselves by a particular style, Evans describes his approach simply: โ€œI just fight like me.โ€ Rather than throwing punches recklessly, he studies openings and waits for the right moment. His philosophy is not about hitting opponents just because they are in front of himโ€”itโ€™s about hitting them when the opportunity presents itself.

One of the most memorable moments of his career came during a fight in Los Angeles, when Evans delivered a devastating left hook knockout that left the crowd stunned. Another defining battle came against Clay Burns, whom Evans considers one of the toughest opponents he has faced so far.

But when asked about his greatest career achievement, Evans doesnโ€™t talk about knockouts or highlight reels. Instead, he points to something far deeper: his stick-to-itiveness.

There is something powerful about a person who refuses to quit. Evans understands that success is not just about talent; it is about determination and the willingness to keep working when everything feels stacked against you.

His training philosophy reflects that mentality. Evans trusts his coach completely and follows the plan laid out for him. The work is intense and relentless.

โ€œWe work hard and rest only when the work is done,โ€ he says. โ€œOur workโ€™s not done yet.โ€

Mental preparation is equally important to Evans. He believes the only true way to prepare mentally for a fight is through hard training. When your body is conditioned and your mind is disciplined, you can handle the pressure of competition.

He also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, especially on difficult days. Tough days, he says, are part of the process. The key is to train your mind to accept them rather than fear them.

Outside the ring, Evans maintains a disciplined lifestyle. He limits sugar and salt intake and focuses on maintaining peak physical condition. But there is more to him than boxing. In his free time, Evans enjoys baking, cooking, drawing, and learning practical tradesโ€”skills he never had the chance to learn growing up.

Despite the hardships of his upbringing, Evans remains grounded and approachable. He describes his support system modestly: not a large family, but enough people who believe in him and stand by him.

One of the most powerful perspectives Evans shares comes from his experience navigating life as a young Black man in America. He speaks openly about the challenges and pressures that come with it.

โ€œAt the end of the day your back will always be against the wall as a Black man,โ€ he says. โ€œBut you either going to break or build. That determines what kind of man you are.โ€

For Evans, adversity is not a stopping pointโ€”it is fuel.

His long-term goal in boxing is simple yet ambitious: to become one of the greats. In the short term, he is focused on continuing to win fights and build financial stability. But his legacy extends beyond titles and money.

Evans wants people to understand that anyone can change their life circumstances.

His message is clear: pray, work hard, and meet your prayers halfway.

After boxing, Evans hopes to step back into life as a normal person. He laughs about how fighters are often viewed as machines.

โ€œIโ€™ll go be a human being,โ€ he says. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll continue being a dad.โ€

To fans and supporters, Evans keeps it simple. He appreciates everyone who has watched him grow in the sport and encourages people to come meet him in person.

โ€œIโ€™m cool, I hope,โ€ he jokes. โ€œBut you wouldnโ€™t know until you meet me.โ€

His motto reflects the mindset that has carried him through life:

โ€œGame Ainโ€™t Based On Sympathy.โ€ โ€” GABOS

As a fighter, Deangelo โ€œMuscleโ€ Evans is dangerous inside the ring. His power, discipline, and undefeated record prove that. But outside the ropes, he is something equally powerful: a humble man who welcomes new connections and continues to build the family he never fully had growing up.

His journeyโ€”from the foster care system in Durham to the bright lights of professional boxingโ€”is still being written.

And if his past has proven anything, itโ€™s that Deangelo โ€œMuscleโ€ Evans isnโ€™t finished yet.
